What's new in the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max?
As someone who has been covering new smartphone releases for years, I can say that recent releases have been somewhat boring. The same cannot be said for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. Here's a quick list of what's new with the latest iPhones:
- 48MP Fusion Main camera: For the first time, the iPhone camera offers aperture control for more control over your photo's depth and lighting. This, plus a new sensor for better image quality, means crisper details and better low-light pictures.
- Additions to the photo editing suite: The Apple collection of Photographic Styles has been upgraded, giving the ability to tweak texture and grain controls. Cinematic effects can also be applied to videos shot at up to 60 frames per second, and Time-lapse mode can now record in 4K and Dolby Vision HDR.
- Apple Reference Image: Thanks to the camera's new sensor, photos taken with the iPhone 18 Pro can now be authenticated when captured in the new Reference mode. In short, the pictures you take will be verifiably real, and not AI.
- Dynamic Island upgrades: Redesigned to fit more information than before, the Dynamic Island (or the black oval that lives around the selfie camera) can now track up to three Live Activities simultaneously.
- A20 Pro-powered performance: Now with 50% more memory bandwidth and 40% faster GPU design than its predecessor, the A20 chip in the iPhone 18 Pro enables faster graphics rendering, more powerful on-device AI processing, and more.
- New cooling and interior architecture: Aimed at eliminating overheating issues of past iPhones, the iPhone 18 Pro features a redesigned vapor chamber and reorganized interior hardware to keep key components cooler for faster performance.
- Unprecedented battery life and charging: eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pros can now deliver up to 36 hours of video playback, while the Pro Max can reach up to 45 hours. Not only that, but the Pro can charge to 50% battery in 15 minutes when plugged in, or in 30 minutes when charging wirelessly.
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max colors
As is tradition with every new iPhone generation, Apple's latest round of smartphones comes in a new range of colors. Quite a departure from last year's vibrant orange, this year's iPhone 18 Pro is available in:
- Burgundy
- Glacier
- Silver
- Black
When is the iPhone 18 Pro release date?
Though it will open for preorders starting on September 12, iPhone 18 Pro models won't be available in shoppers' hands until September 18. Fulfillment dates will also be pushed out as stock dwindles, so your order may not arrive until after that date if you order late.
When will the iPhone Duo release?
It was announced in the same keynote, but Apple will not be releasing the iPhone Duo for some time. The new foldable will be up for preorder starting October 16, with phones shipping as soon as October 23.
